pelagikos has recently been approached by multiday boat owners to provide technical assistance to mitigate depredation of the longline fishery catch by marine mammals. Several boat owners have deployed non-explosive, acoustic devices (pingers) to deter depredation by marine mammals notably Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus). Initially the pingers were succesfful, according to boat owners. However over time the boat owners feel that the dolphins have begun to associate the acoustic signal from the pingers with the longline tuna and tuna-like species catch, causing the depredation to resume. Multiday boat owners are currently inserting mainlines without branch lines and baited hooks and main lines with branch lines and baited hooks, to reduce depredation of their catch. |
